The last holiday of the summer. My Sr. Shooter Hugh and I were bored…so packed up the Jeep and headed west. Closest beach was Tillamook, about an hr. west of us. A great place to go is at the entrance to the ocean at Tillasmook Bay. With the current round of forest fires this means hazey skies and fire red sunsets. Make sure to have a handful of Cokins, and alot of chips. always use a daylight white balance, we always use RAW file formats because we never know where the image is going to go. A billboard or box of cat food.

Shot with available light 35 m.m. series H lens from 1955

Great Photos are like fishing. I spent the better part of two hours waiting for this guy to get where I wanted him. When shooting the red ball. Go for the 100 iso at f/8 at 1000 and you can’t miss.

Waiting that last 30 min. can make or brake a shot.
A one and a million shot…I call these my God shots.

I've been shooting fires, forest fires and firefighters for over three decades. My favorite assignments were for the U.S. Forest service in Washington DC. Also, following the Navajo hotshot crews around the foothils near Idaho City in Idaho. A friend of mine Jason Rautenkranz a volunteer paramedic for the Colton Oregon Fire district recently teamed me up with Chief Beaudoin the youngest chief in Oregon as we can tell. This led to an assignment to do the design and multimedia for the department. Look for further details.

Some of my greatest experiences were during concerts. During the 1,2,3, songs your out my assistant & wife Joanne & I could shoot 20 rolls of film before they physically escorted us from the concert. She is still one of my best assistants!!!

Cindi Lauper

Cindi is still a show stopper today and one of the most beautiful women I have photographed. My most favorite song was her christmas carole sung with the late Bing Crosby. Concerts are most difficult to shoot. The promoters give you no time to shoot & they always want you gone. Lighting is a nightmare.

Jessica Lerner Cure JM Concert 2010

Up and coming performer Jessica Lerner from San Diego set-up before her performance at a local Cure Juvenile Mycositis Concert in Oregon. With concerts I have to work with the light My experience of many years of working with sports events taught me a lot about low light conditions.

It seem as though every sports shooter has his moments, trophies if you will. Mine vary from shooting the late great Payne Stewart to Edwin Moses at the IAAF World Track and Field Trials. These are a few of my memories and stories.

An incredable man, and humanitarian.

As usual, Mary had come back from a lenghty injury and was running for the first time post-injury at the Prefontaine Classic.

Copyright Bob Hawkeye Collins

While shooting the Prefontaine Classis in Eugene, Drake was shooting next to me with his shiny 300 F2 Nikon lens and I was stuck with my 300 2.8 and an 80-200 2.8. It was a typical Oregon track day and officials had just spent 20 minutes squeegying off the track. Then, luckily the sun came out I was at 400 iso wide open at 500. I love this shot of Mary Slaney. Sports shooters do just that…get the job done, no matter what.
